Ahh, a bit overdue for a review on this climactic ending to the Pirate's trilogy.
Continuing from my riviting review on the 2nd installment...
Pirates 3 starts off with Davy Jones now commandeered into service by the manipulative Cutler Beckett. Beckett, now in possesion of Jones' heart, has Jones reluctantly obeying commands, lest Jones's heart be destroyed, thus ending his immortality.
Meanwhile, Will Turner, Elizabeth, Tia Dalma, and the revived Hector Barbossa set their sights on saving Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones locker. Why go through all this trouble? With Jones sinking pirate ships left an' right throughout the seas, the brethren court, basically an elite organization of pirates composed of 9 "pirate lords", has issued a summons for said pirate lords. The brethren court has decided to find a way to stop Beckett and Jones from eliminating piracy. Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, and Sao Feng are a few examples of the said pirate lords necessary to find a dangerous, secret way of dealing with Jones and Beckett.
They find and rescue Jack from the locker (Not a very big spoiler actually). They now must make their way to Shipwreck island, the base of the brethren court (Jack actually points out the uncreativity of the name).
As for other characters, Bootstrap Bill Turner is locked in the brig of the Dutchman, gradually becoming assimilated into the ship. His humanity is gradually being lost, becoming a brainwashed pawn for the dark purposes of Jones.
You discover who Jones's lover was, and more about the "Once on land every 10 years" curse, as well as his abandoned duty of ferrying the souls lost at sea to the afterlife.
The plot is slightly confusing as characters swap ships and sides in the ordeal, making keeping track of the character-in-question's motives and position a bit confuzzling.
Despite its shortcomings, the film has awesome special effects, especially during the final battle. The Black Pearl and the Dutchman face off in a tumultuous maelstrom of, literally, epic proportions. It's really, really cool. My personal favorite final-battle sequence in any movie I've ever seen.
Will Beckett be brought down? Will Jones be destroyed? What will become of Sparrow, Turner, and Elizabeth? Why am I asking so many questions?
If you haven't seen it yet, do look into it (after, of course, watching the first two).
This critic gives Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At Worlds End, a juicy, well-deserved 8/10.
