In 1974, in celebration of the reconstruction of the Arecibo satellite dish in Puerto Rico, scientists fired an extremely powerful 20 trillion watt message into space, towards global cluster M13.
The message consisted of basic information that included numbers and messages in binary data. It included, from top to bottom, numbers, components in DNA like hydrogen and carbon, nucleotides, a ddouble-helix DNA strand, a human, the planets of the solar system (with the 3rd planet, Earth, elevated above the others) and finally, the arecibo telescope itself.
The message was expected to reach its destination in 25,000 years...a long time, not to mention the 25,000 years required to receive a reply.
But in 2001, we actually did receive a (debatable) reply.
The Arecibo reply, as it's called, features notable variations from the original, etched in, suprise suprise, a crop field in england.
The double helix has been noticeably altered, and silicon was added as one of the elements of life. It is theorized by scientists that silicon is a possible substitute for carbon, carbon being the element most life on earth is composed of.
The differences include the human, now replaced by a humanoid form, shaped like a generic "gray": a large noggin. The planets are slightly different. There are still nine depicted, but earth, as well as 4 and 5 (Mars and Jupiter) are elevated.
The dot pattern showed next to the man in the original message displayed our population; the new pattern shows the "gray" population is 6 1/2 billion more than our own.
The arecibo radio dish has been replaced by a larger, dish-shaped device, (according to reports, the arecibo was depicted at being 2,430 feet in diameter, but the new one is over 6,700 feet in diameter)
Of course, it's still debated. While some crop formations all over the world have been elaborate hoaxes, this one is rather detailed, the geometry in it being nearly perfect, something difficult to accomplish in modern technological terms, especially by common-folk.
I'll leave the decission up to you.
Discussness.
