Let's keep things simple and direct here. Simply put a list of your favorite anime's before the eyes of the one or to other people that might fall upon your ideals.
My list:
1. Bleach.
Simply an action packed, awesome anime with sword fights, a balance of humor, action, and even just a smidgen of romance. Overall just a great show. Trying to explain it all here would span paragraph after paragraph, so I'll just keep it short.
2. Excel Saga
Officially usurping the #2 spot from Trigun, I found Excel Saga to be a uniquely funny anime. Every character is colorful and unique: From the charismatic Ilpalazzo, to the hyperactive Excel, to the hopeless romantic Watanabe, to the never-ending sorrows of the immigrant worker, Pedro. It's a truly hilarious show, the funniest anime I've ever seen.
3. Trigun
An action filled show worthy of any mention. Vash, the main character, has a double-sided personality. During the times of ease, he is goofy, kind, and sometimes lecherous to the ladies. During the tense moments, he becomes an altruistic warrior of peace, believing strongly in his carchphrase "Love and Peace". He is an ace gunman, yet he never ever killed anyone, which is almost contradicting his own purpose. The reason it falls short is that the quality may be lacking in some areas visually, but other than that, it's great.
4. Cowboy Bebop
A futuristic anime that I'm sure everyone's heard of or watched at some point. Action packed, at times funny, and visually beautiful, it's purely a great action show that is never disappointing.
5. Samurai Champloo
A strict action anime, it's probably the goriest and bloodiest on my list. People being sliced in half, death cries abound, etc. It takes place in the edo period in Japan, featuring 3 main characters. Two ace swordsman, and a young girl (Jin, Mugen, and Fuu, respectively). Jin is quiet and soft spoken, rarely speaking his mind or showing any sign of emotion. Mugen is thingyy and arrogant, and his voice actor is also the voice actor of Spike Spiegel, the main character from Cowboy Bebop. Fuu is a young, sometimes naive girl, who at times provces to be more of a nuisance in the party than a benefit. She seeks a samurai "who smells of sunflowers". Overall, shortcomings aside, very action-y and something to look in to.
Honorable mentions:
Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, Shin Chan, Chobits
First anime's I've watched: Tenchi Muyo, Kikaider
